Chapter 4

Steve felt so sexy in his new deep black, three-piece Hugo Boss suit that Glenda had insisted he buy. He checked the lapel. You could hardly see the baby's spit-up on it. Not unless you stood under a bright light. The man at the cleaner's on the corner of his street had worked his best on the stain and said it would dry fully in an hour. He checked his watch. Forty minutes to go.

He'd appreciated Glenda's help and adored baby Anna, but really he'd felt compelled to buy the top-of-the line suit after the kid barfed on him. His new socks, boxer briefs and shoes also felt good. There was something about new clothes that made a person feel special. He loved the cut and fit of the suit. He rarely wore vests but the three-button one that came with the suit gave it an added flair. He loved the welt pockets in the vest and the two-button suit jacket.

Steve checked his face for any stray boogers or hairs. He palmed his hair and washed his hands. He'd brushed his teeth. Why the hell was he so nervous? He'd had fine dining experiences with businessmen all over the world, for chrissakes.

He avoided Chloe's death-ray stare. She looked so woebegone, even though they'd had a nice, long afternoon walk. Well, long for Chloe, anyway.

His front doorbell rang. He opened it to find Christos standing there. He couldn't hide his surprise and tried to tamp down his disappointment.

"Aw...don't worry. I'm taking you right to him. Alexio had a late meeting, unexpectedly. Mi Sun and I are taking you with us."

"Great," Steve said.

"Is this your wonderful Chloe?" Christos bent to pat the dog. "Alexio loves her already. You look amazing, but I don't think you should wear that," Christos suddenly said.

Steve's hand flew to his slightly marred lapel. Could he see the spit-up?

"Why?" he asked.

"He won't be able to keep his hands off you and this is a public event, you know."

Steve grinned. Charm ran in the Manolis family.

"Wow, thank you. My assistant's baby threw up on me. Can you tell?" He pointed to his lapel.

"No." Christos grinned. "But let's keep it our little secret, shall we?"

Steve felt like a total doofus now. His cell phone rang as he locked the front door. Chloe yapped in indignation.

He checked the readout. A text message from Alexio.

I can't wait to see you when you get here. Need to kiss you. xoxo

Shit. How could he be disappointed when the man sent him texts like that?

Christos suddenly gripped his arm.

"What is it?" Steve asked, following the man's gaze.

"It's my wife. And she's at the wheel."

"Let me guess...not a good thing?"

"It's bad. Very, very bad. She's the worst driver I've ever seen."

And I was worried about spit on my lapel?

"You've got to help me. Convince her to let me drive."

"How am I supposed to do that without offending her?" Steve asked. "I just met her. I want her to like me."

"She likes you plenty. Trust me. If she drives you'll never live to kiss my brother again.
